Training and Caring for Dolphins in Xcaret

In Xcaret, the dream of swimming with dolphins can
come true. Touching them, listening to them and
admiring them from a very short distance, while they
offer some aquatic acrobatics and they give a serene
smile as a sign of friendship.
At times like a whimsical, playful child, and other
times like an adult trying to learn more about
nature, the dolphin is one of the ocean’s most
interesting species, as its behavior often resembles
that of human beings.
Dolphins act as guides as they swim, interacting
with our visitors at Xcaret during a long time in a
free, calm and relaxed way, demonstrating the great
ability they possess to interact with human beings.
Swimmers learn about dolphins and they feel their
strength and speed as they are propelled by them in
the water and as they watch them jump over their
heads.
Our Xcaret Swim with Dolphins programs, some of the
best in the world as constantly rated by our park
visitors, surely make up for one of the best
experiences that tourists can find in Cancun Mexico.
Training and caring
All the attentions to our Dolphins
ALL THE ATTENTION AND CARE
The biologists of Xcaret Park and veterinarians meet
all the needs of these amazing dolphins. They
monitor their health, weight, food, and in some
facilities they conduct research on their behavior
to present their findings at international
conferences.
Here, dolphins are treated with care and respect;
their well being is always the main priority. In
fact, biologists claim that the life expectancy of a
dolphin, which is about 40 years, increases when
they are placed in captivity or semi-captivity (in
extensive areas of their natural habitat). As proof
of this, dolphins have actually been born in one of
these aquariums. The way in which baby dolphins are
brought into this world is quite an experience: they
come out of their mother’s womb tail first so as not
to drown and they emerge like torpedoes to the
surface as they take in their first breath. Their
first year is a delicate time, because dolphins are
born without antibodies, however, their mothers feed
them for one or two years, providing them with these
defenses.
Qualified dolphin trainers, who are constantly
learning new skills, spend long hours with dolphins.
At this time, the magic goes well beyond
expectations: the relationship between trainers and
dolphins is as close as that found in a family,
where every single approach of the dolphin trainer
receives an answer from the dolphin. A jump that
soars more than two meters up in the air, a tail
dance, a flipper greeting, a friendly sound, and
other underwater tricks, are some of the ways in
which dolphins show their fondness and approval.
Due to their high cognitive capability, these
animals understand every instruction their trainers
give them. Dolphins have the ability to associate
and this allows them to translate each sign and to
develop a series of perfectly synchronized
movements. With a so-called target pole, which
function as an extension of their trainer’s hand,
dolphins learn to identify instructions until they
develop a language that allows them to establish a
sophisticated communication with their trainer.
Ancestral Maya saw the dolphin as a sacred animal
and a source of inspiration for the creation of
myths and legends. Today dolphins contribute to
aquatic therapies and humanities disciplines, and
experience has shown that all they lack is being
able to talk.
In Xcaret, the dream of swimming with dolphins can
come true.

Extraordinary Shows
Xcaret Spectacular Night comes at the end of an
entire day full of adventures at the Eco Park. In
the Valley of the Scents, the deep call of
pre-Hispanic drums resonate in the night air and the
wind carries the notes of ocarinas, bells and conch
shells. The priests and Mayan warriors, wrapped in
the smoke of incense, announce an unprecedented
cultural and historic journey in the Grand Tlachco,
the large theatre that has a seating capacity of
6,000. Accompanied by the song of the conch shells
and other pre-Hispanic musical instruments, Mayan
children open the spectacle singing in chorus an
ancestral legend. For more information about the

Ball Game

One of Xcaret’s objectives is to disseminate the
culture heritage of the Mexican people and the Mayan
culture. At sunset, the Park is transformed with
wonderful shows, including the pre-Hispanic ball
game announced by the tankules (wooden drums) that
resound through the afternoon silence.
Originating more than 3,500 years ago, the ball game
was a political/religious activity widely played
throughout Mesoamerica facing captured nobles
against their conquerors. In this ritual game,
considered a cosmic metaphor, the ball simulated the
trajectory of the stars, and the players determined
their path through the firmament. During the
conquest, the Spanish forbade the game and nearly
succeeded in eradicating it. However, it survived in
some regions of Mexico under the name of Ulama.
Today, Xcaret presents a demonstration of this
ancient game. The ball court new recreates the
architectural style of Monte Alban (in Oaxaca) and
Copan (in Honduras). The heavy rubber ball (weighing
some 8.5 pounds) rolls and bounces against the
sloped side walls. The objective is to pass the ball
through the stone rings embedded high up on these
walls, using only the hips.
Through this presentation, Xcaret has rescued and
disseminated a millenary tradition. What was once
only imagined from the archaeological remains of
ball courts throughout Mesoamerica has come
spectacularly to life at Xcaret.

Voladores de
Papantla

Four bird men of Totonacan blood will descend from
the top of the universal tree, doing circles in the
air. 30 meters above ground the leader dances and
plays pre-Hispanic instruments.
These are the Papantla flyers worshipping the sun
god. This impressive show of courage and faith of
the Papantla fliers at Xcaret is an ancient ceremony
which originated in the state of Veracruz in the
Gulf of Mexico to ask for a good harvest and
fertility.
The fliers, representing the four elements and the
four cardinal points, go up a 30 meter pole and tied
by their waist jump head first into the air with
their arms open. The fliers make their way down each
going around the pole exactly 13 times which amounts
to the number of months in the Mayan calendar.
The Flying Men of Papantla
Added up, they symbolize the 52 years of the
pre-Hispanic cosmic cycle after which a new sun is
born and life begins again. Without a rope around
him , the leader dances on top of the pole. He turns
to each one of the cardinal points beginning by the
west which is the origin of life.
He is the main flier that guides the descent of the
other four while playing the flute which symbolizes
the song of the birds and the drum which represents
the voice of god.
You can enjoy this worship ritual in its
presentation outdoors where they also represent the
dance of the Huahuas and also at night in the Xcaret
Spectacular Mexico night show. It is something not
to be missed!
This is a ceremony dedicated to the Sun god asking
for fertility and good crops. The four flying men
represent the four elements earth, air, fire and
water

Deer Shelter

Among the diversity of fauna at Xcaret one that had
to be present was the deer, a cultural symbol of the
Yucatan Peninsula and an important representative of
its biological richness.
Take a peek into their world and let yourself be
captivated by their sweet eyes.
Deer were animals Mayans greatly valued as they were
the symbol of all things sacred.
The legend says that Itzamna decided to create a
land so beautiful that everyone that knew it would
want to live there.
That is when he created the land of the Mayab and
handed it over to to the Mayan people so they could
inhabit it, selecting three animals to represent
them: the pheasant, the deer and the snake.
In Mayan mythology it was the deer that created the
moon´s sexual organs with its hoof, it was also
admired because of its beauty and its agility. Deer
meat was part of Mayan food and greatly valued for
its taste.
Its skin was used to draw and write many of their
important codexes. White tailed deer and temazate or
brocket deer can be seen at Xcaret with their young.
They are born with white spots on their coats which
help them to be mimetic, to blend into the
vegetation, and protect themselves from predators
such as the ocelot and the jaguar.
Xcaret, Mexico´s Sacred Paradise, is committed to
its goal that one of the most beautiful species in
local fauna will not become just a memory.
The deer refuge at Xcaret is carrying out a
successful reproduction program of this protected
species.
